The objectives of the Union are:-

  • To further the interests of amateur golf on Anglesey.

  • To hold Anglesey Amateur Championship meetings every year and other events that may be authorised from time to time.

  • To encourage inter county and inter club matches.

  • To assist in the implementation of the Standard Scratch Score and Handicapping Scheme on specified areas delegated to it by the Golf Union of Wales.

The Anglesey Golf Union was formed at a meeting held at the Holyhead Golf Club in February 1965 chaired by Mr J. Hall of the home club with M. S. Hair (Anglesey Golf Club) acting as secretary. Initially the Union was anxious to compete in the North Wales Inter Counties Championship – this aim was successfully met.

In its early years the Union was fortunate to be guided by knowledgeable golfers such as W. H. Slater (Holyhead), Idris Owen (Baron Hill) and H. V. Roberts (Holyhead).

Union activities in early years were limited to county matches – by to-day though the A G U is actively involved in a wide range of events.

At junior level the Union takes great pride in its coaching scheme which was established in the mid 70's partially funded by support from the Anglesey Borough Council. The current scheme is supported financially by Baynes Haulage, Irish Ferries, Nat West Bank and Warriners Estate Agency, and is presently supervised by Union junior organiser Randall Richards who works conscientiously to develop junior golf further on the island

Numerous well known junior golfers such as Emyr Jones, Simon Owen and Aled Llyr are testimony to the value of a well organised junior coaching scheme and at present Mark Parry (Holyhead Golf Club) is a valued member of the Welsh boys team.

The county junior championship event has seen a marked increase in the number of entries in recent years and the Ynys Mon inter club team shield is a popular event. The county junior squad always gives a good account of itself in the North Wales Inter Counties League but unfortunately a number of promising youngsters are lost to Anglesey golf when they finish their schooling and have to travel further afield to develop their education further – but the AGU can rightly feel that they’ve played a small, but important part, in their development.

The county fields a Colts team too in order to try and bridge the gap between junior golf and county first team golf – success at colts level has unfortunately been rather limited.

Anglesey G C , Rhosneigr's Howie Hughes is the current county team captain following in the footsteps of other well known golfing personalities like Tony Toth (Holyhead), Ian Furlong (Bull Bay) O. E. Jones (Holyhead) and Mark Perdue (Holyhead).

For a fairly small Union Anglesey can be relatively happy with team performances in past years – when a full strength side is fielded a good account is usually given but unfortunately the squad at times lacks strength in depth – this being apparent on many occasions when failure in the final couple of games has resulted in narrow defeats.

The county scratch championship is always keenly contested but since its inception the event has been dominated by David McLean – an excellent ambassador not only for Anglesey but of Welsh golf. The handicap championship (combining with the inter club championship) is well supported also. Past North Wales Four Counties captain, Ian Furlong (Bull Bay Golf Club) introduced the match play championship in the mid 1990’s – the event providing up and coming low handicapped golfers an opportunity to compete against established county team members. The President’s trophy, (donated by Union Past President Bill Davies) a stableford competition, is also a feature of the annual calendar.

At Seniors level the Union organises a County Seniors Championship (gross and nett) and the popular Ynys Mon inter club seniors competition is a popular mid week event during the Summer months – the winning club receiving the Rawlinson Shield kindly presented to the Union by Ken Rawlinson (Baron Hill Golf Club)

Off the course the Union holds an Annual Dinner in late January and recent successful functions have been honoured to have as guest speakers Clive Brown (Walker Cup captain) and John Roger Jones (Past President WGU)

For a small island the A G U is a very active Union and the development made by golf on Anglesey is a tribute to the small group of golfers who met at Holyhead Golf Club over four decades ago.
